The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of connected devices that can collect and exchange data. It began with simple remote monitoring of things like vending machines and has since expanded to include fully connected cars, smart grids, and telehealth. By 2025, it is estimated that there will be as many as 75 billion IoT connected devices. The development of 5G networks, which have higher speeds and can support more devices per square kilometre, have opened new possibilities for the IoT, such as remote healthcare and autonomous driving.

However, the large number of connected devices also increases the potential for vulnerabilities and the need for secure data protection. To ensure that these future solutions do not present new threats, worldwide regulations and secure data protection measures are necessary. Some applications require low bandwidth and coverage in challenging installation situations, while others require ultra-high bandwidth. Many solutions are designed to be in the field for decades and are battery-powered, often needing to withstand harsh environments.
